04:01:04:00 Reassignment of Advisee

Purpose:

There are various situations which may cause a student to be reassigned to a different advisor. This policy addresses these situations and the actions to be taken by Dyersburg State Community College (DSCC).

Scope:

This policy applies to all DSCC applicants and students and DSCC staff involved with processing changes related to applicant and student educational records.

Policy:

Reasons for a change in advisor assignment fall into the following categories:

  • Applicant indicated the wrong program of study on the Application for Admission or Readmission.
  • Student changes to a different program of study, resulting in the need to change the advisor assignment.
  • Student changes from non-degree to degree-seeking or vice versa.
  • Change in the DSCC personnel.
  • Former student applies for readmission into a different program of study.

In the first example above, the applicant should submit a Change of Information form to a DSCC One Stop Center. The form will be processed by the Office of Admissions. The applicant will be notified of the advisor reassignment.

In the second and third example, the student should submit a Change of Information form to a DSCC One Stop Center. The form will be processed by the Office of Records. The student will be notified of the advisor reassignment. The previous and the newly-assigned advisor will also be notified of the change.

In the fourth example, students are notified if they are reassigned to a different advisor due to changes in personnel.

In the fifth example, former students applying for readmission may be assigned to a different advisor due to a different intended program of study or change in DSCC personnel since the student was last enrolled.

Advisors are requested to access their list of advisees often during the semester and especially before the period of advising and Priority Registration begins.

Instructions for viewing one’s advisees are posted on the Faculty & Advisors tab in
MyDSCC, the institution’s Luminis portal.

Compliance:

Students are strongly encouraged to become familiar with their advisor and to inform the Office of Admissions or the Office of Records if they wish to change their program of study.
