04:04:02:00 Bringing Children to Class

Purpose:

The purpose of this policy is to provide safety and security to minor children visiting Dyersburg State Community College (DSCC) property who are not participating in a special program for children sponsored by the College.

Scope:

This policy applies to all DSCC employees and students.

Policy:

The presence of children in the college classroom, especially small children, constitutes a distraction for the instructor, as well as other members of the class, and, therefore, compromises the effectiveness of the learning environment. An instructor may ask a student to leave who brings a child to class. While parents are in classes, children should not be allowed to be unattended on college property including classrooms, outdoor areas and college common areas such as the gymnasium, study lounges, and hallways excluding areas designated for children in the shared usage Tipton County Public Library and DSCC Learning Resource Center. These areas were not designed to accommodate children, especially young children not under constant supervision by adults. The College is primarily a place for adults, and it is anticipated that when children are brought into campus facilities, it is for a brief period while parents are conducting administrative business or for a special program for children sponsored by the College.

Compliance:

All DSCC faculty, staff and students must adhere to this policy.
