Purpose:

The purpose of this policy is to establish student orientation for new Dyersburg State Community College (DSCC) students.

Scope:

Orientation for new students will be offered online and at the Dyersburg Campus, the DSCC Jimmy Naifeh Center at Tipton County and the DSCC Gibson County Center prior to fall and spring semesters for new, degree-seeking students.

Policy:

Orientation for new students is part of the first-year experience for first-time students. Topics to be discussed during orientation include:

  • College Survival Skills
  • Academic Support Resources available in person or online including:
    • the LRC and the LRC web page
    • the Tutoring Center and online tutoring options
    • the Advising Center
    • the Career Counseling Center and Career Center web resources
    • Personal Counseling and the Counseling web page
  • Services for Students with Disabilities
  • Reading, Writing and Math Labs
  • Student Activities and Student Organizations and the Student Government Association online course
  • Navigating the web site including use of the course management system
  • Utilizing the student web portal to access student self-service options
  • Admission and Financial Aid requirements including Satisfactory Progress Standards
  • Review of the DSCC Catalog and Student Handbook including the DSCC Code of Honor and Citizenship, Parking Regulations and the Annual Security Report.
  • Location of offices and classrooms and the online staff directory

Compliance:

All new degree-seeking students are required to complete orientation for new students.
